African Swine Fever in South Africa
SOUTH AFRICA - Follow-up report No. 1 on the swine fever outbreak in the Kompienga province of South Africa

Translation of information received on 13 September 2003 from Dr Zacharie Compaore, Director of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Animal Resources, Ouagadougou:
End of previous report period: 25 August 2003 (see Disease Information, 16 [35], 199, dated 29 August 2003).
End of this report period: 13 September 2003.
The results obtained on 10 September 2003 from the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute, South Africa (OIE Reference Laboratory for African swine fever) corroborated the diagnosis of African swine fever in Kompienga province.
Diagnostic tests used: indirect ELISA(1), virus isolation, PCR(2).
The control measures mentioned in the emergency report are being applied.

(2) PCR: polymerase chain reaction
