PMWS and PDNS latest news August 2003

UK - Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) Quarterly Surveillance report on PMWS and PDNS from April to June 2003

Following on from the comments in the previous Quarterly Surveillance Report, VLA Bury St Edmunds reported that several practitioners in their region had noted a marked increase in PMWS (increased wasting and mortality) in growing pigs on units where mortality had previously been controlled by the 20-point Madec Plan.

PMWS was confirmed on the basis of gross lesions, histopathological changes, and IHC for PCV-2 in a 4-month-old purebred farmed wildboar. The pig came from a 110-sow commercial outdoor unit with a problem of illthrift in piglets from around three months of age – weaning age is variable from three to five months of age.

PMWS was confirmed in two 9-week-old pigs, which were anaemic, wasting, and scouring, and had developed pendulous abdomens. PMWS had previously been diagnosed on the unit where it presented as respiratory disease.
