JSR Genetics sign new Japanese agreement

UK - Following an expansion in breeding stock sales in Japan and business structural changes, a new agreement has been signed between JSR Genetics and the Marubeni-Nisshin Feed Co (MNFC) for the supply of genetically-advanced breeding pigs through to 2008.

The Marubeni Corporation signed an exclusive breeding franchise with the Cotswold Pig Development Company in 1987 when a 500-sow multiplication farm was built and stocked with animals imported from the UK.

Since then the business has expanded into a nucleus operation with satellite multiplication farms strategically sited throughout the country.

In the UK Cotswold was purchased and incorporated into JSR Genetics, while in Japan the Marubeni Feed Company merged with the Nisshin Feed Co to create Japan's largest animal feed manufacturer.

This meant that, despite the increase in sales, neither of the original companies had any day-to-day input into the business, so a new contract was drawn up to reflect the current trading arrangements.

The agreement was signed by Noburu Fukushima, president of MNFC and Tim Rymer, chairman of JSR Genetics' during a visit to the Marubeni-Nisshin Feed Co's headquarters in Tokyo. Also present at the signing ceremony were Hiroshi Yamanishi, chairman of MNFC; Manabu Sakanaka, president of Cotswold Japan; Brian Edwards, JSR Genetics' export director and Lynn Evans manager responsible for the Japanese market.

"The Japanese market is an extremely sophisticated and demanding one and is very important to us, so we are delighted to have formally agreed to continue working together with the signing of this new agreement," commented Lynn Evans.
