Schering-Plough launches Aivlosin - A new generation antibiotic for the treatment of enzootic pneumonia in finishing pigs

Derived from further fermentation of tylosin and available as a premix for medicating pig feed, Aivlosin demonstrates a three-fold increase in bio-availability. The specific activity against M. hyopneumoniae has been enhanced several times over its parent molecule. In field trials in the UK and Ireland Aivlosin has proved highly successful in the treatment and prevention of E. P.

Speaking at the launch of Aivlosin in the UK, Schering-Plough Pig Advisor Ross Kelly BVMS, MRCVS explained: "Aivlosin is an entirely new macrolide and generates accelerated levels of antibacterial activity at the site of infection. This activity treats the disease directly within the respiratory system and also limits its establishment and progression. This means infected pigs recover more quickly, return to optimum growth rates faster and the burden of disease challenge is limited on the unit."

Schering-Plough is now hosting a number of briefings to provide pig vets with the background to Aivlosin. "The feedback we are getting is very positive," said Mr. Kelly. "E. P. remains a costly challenge for UK pig producers and vets feel the launch of Aivlosin offers a valuable new treatment option."
