UK - Major UK pig-breeding company, ACMC, is strengthening its innovative technical department with the appointment of two new animal scientists with additional meat quality expertise.
The Yorkshire, UK based company which has taken the lead in the development of pig genetics and exports to Asia, has employed animal science graduates Grant Ward as Technical Manager, and Lucy Campbell as the new Research Coordinator.
Mr Ward studied at the University of Nottingham and Bristol University, where he obtained his Master’s degree in meat science and technology. He will be heading up an ACMC team that is dedicated to the improvement of meat quality within the genetic programme.
Before joining the company, Mr Ward spent five years gaining practical experience as a stockman on a 550-sow unit in Wymeswold, Loughborough, Leics. He also worked on meat quality trials at Bristol University for eight months.
Miss Campbell, who has an animal science (hons) degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, will be responsible for running ACMC’s portfolio of research trials on company Farms. Lucy was an animal health officer at Defra’s Newcastle Disease Emergency Control Centre during the outbreak of FMD. After that, Miss Campbell worked as a Research Officer at Askham Bryan College, where she coordinated the collection of data for the recent National Pig Survey.
Commenting on the appointments, ACMC technical director Edward Sutcliffe said: “Grant and Lucy are a welcome addition to the technical team. We are determined to continue our efforts to improve meat quality and these appointments will help us focus our efforts to this end.”
