IFA pigs committee chairman lashes processors for failure to increase price

IRELAND - In a stinging criticism of the two main pig processors in the Republic of Ireland, IFA Pigs Committee Chairman, Pat O’ Keeffe, said that the failure of Glanbia and Dawn to increase prices for pigs slaughtered this week has confirmed to producers that their future under this regime is not bright.

In a week where every country across the EU increased prices, Irelands two major players abused their dominant market position by refusing to pass back even a portion of the price increases seen in other countries.

“Irish producers have been conned into believing that increased scale and efficient processing plants were to be the key to a successful and sustainable future for Irish pig production.

This has so far proven well wide of the mark as the Irish pig price of just €1.24/kg is the lowest across the EU.” Mr. O’ Keeffe continued, that every market analyst is reporting a significantly stronger market for pigmeat in the past 2 to 3 weeks, yet Irish prices have not increased at all in this period, while countries such as France, Germany, Holland and Belgium have all increased by over 10c/kg to an average price of €1.35, which is €7 per pig more than Irish producers will receive this week.

‘Irish producers cannot or will not continue pig production in this country at that sort of price disadvantage and if that’s the best marketing effort from Irish factories, then producers surviving on the margins in pig production will have to seriously consider their future.’
