Print This Page Check out costly carcase condemnations
UK - At a time when on-farm mortality in many herds is still high, pig producers should not overlook the compounding effect of carcase condemnation at the abattoir, says Mark White, veterinary consultant to JSR Genetics.
Some reports regularly indicate up to one per cent of whole carcases are condemned in some herds for a variety of reasons, such as pyaemia or septic pleurisy.
For recording purposes, such losses should be added to the on-farm mortality figures to give a true measure of disease issues - particularly since finished pigs are carrying the costs of their full amount of feed and haulage charges. Also, producers are often charged an inflated fee for carcase disposal.
He says that pig producers should be encouraged to take note of and ask for clarification regarding the problems then seek advice from their veterinary surgeons as to how these can be solved by on-farm disease-control strategies.
