Watch hygiene when liquid feeding piglets
UK - To achieve optimum digestion of colostrum and milk, some piglets need water. Furthermore, it is well accepted that piglets which receive inadequate milk or are scouring require liquid supplements with sugar-based electrolyte products.
If such products are to work efficiently, it is important that they are offered in a clean and uncontaminated condition, since any serious bacterial contamination will exacerbate scouring, points out Mark White, veterinary consultant to JSR Genetics.
It is, therefore, important that troughs and drinkers are regularly and thoroughly cleaned and the liquids replenished at least at either end of the day. The presence of sugar in a warm environment creates the perfect medium for microbial growth.
The widely-used cube drinkers are of particular concern since they are difficult to clean inside. Thick slime and scum, which contaminates the water or electrolyte solution, can often be detected when fingers are inserted inside. Such drinkers should not be used unless they can be thoroughly cleaned, he says.
