Print This Page PIC announces the successful stocking of its third high health Nucleus Herd
PHILIPPINES - More than 200 GGP gilts and boars were imported from PIC's Bluegrass Genetic Nucleus herd in Kentucky USA to populate the newly constructed facilities, located within a 600-hectare sugar plantation, on the island of Negros in the Visayas region of the country.
The herd will be developed to at least 400 GGPs from the initial seedstock and is designed to supply Multipliers and Customers in the Visayas and further afield.
"This is a strategically important achievement", said Vincent Borromeo, general manager of PIC Philippines, PIC's wholly-owned Manila subsidiary. "With the two existing Nucleus Herds in Luzon (1998) and Mindanao (2000), and Multipliers throughout the archipelago, we are in a unique and unrivalled position to supply the genetic needs of producers nationwide. The import also featured PIC lines that are new to the Philippines and thus strengthens the local platform for future product development to cater to the evolving requirements of the industry"

There are an estimated 1.5m sows in the Philippines of which roughly one-third are in commercial farms and form the core of PIC's customer base. The company has, however, developed an innovative business model that enables the more numerous, but smaller, backyard farmers to have access to the same world-class genetics as the commercial segment.
Andrew Bateson, managing director of PIC's Asian operations, commented "This is the 17th PIC Nucleus herd to be established in Asia. It is another demonstration of the growing momentum of PIC's business in the region and our commitment to create outstanding value for its producers and consumers."
