New hog regulations to include house pig

NEW ZEALAND - The days when pigs could be fed all the untreated food scraps from the family kitchen, restaurants, hospitals and other institutions are over. Now a campaign is underway to advise dozens of backyard operators who keep a handful of pigs that they must comply with the new regulations.

This is not expected to be easy. Many households, including in South Auckland, fatten up a pig or two for family occasions, such as birthdays, Mother's Day and Christmas. Other small operators keep two or three sows at a time: a far cry from industry heavyweights who have up to 3000 pigs in their operations.

Angus Davidson, chief executive of the Pork Industry Board said it is difficult to let such people know of the new regulations.

It is believed that up to 10 per cent of all pork consumed in this country is produced by small operators who may fatten a few pigs for a big occasion, and have none at all at other times.
