ACMC opens up new Asian market

UK - A new market is being opened up in the Philippines with the shipment of £80,000 worth of genetically-advanced breeding stock from Yorkshire-based pig breeding company, ACMC.

Two hundred and thirty pedigree Meidam boars and gilts are being used to establish a brand new 200-sow nucleus and multiplier unit, currently being set up by Wellisa Farms Ltd, on the tropical island of Bantayan, north of Cebu, in the south of the archipelago.

The unit will produce breeding stock for the company's own 600-sow commercial herd. Surplus stock will be sold back to ACMC to market to other farmers in the Philippines through Dr Danny Silbor at its recently-established agency office ACMC (Phils).

The nucleus stock, all of high health status, was sent in two batches with the second consignment being flown from Manchester to Cebu earlier this month.

ACMC will provide on-going technical support from the UK. This includes the analysis of performance test results, used to identify genetically superior animals which will be retained to produce the next generation of breeding stock.

In addition, as part of the package, Wellisa farms will have access to PigCom software, ACMC's own windows-based pig management and recording scheme. Again, data will be analysed at the company's headquarters in the UK.

"The Asian pig industries are growing rapidly and becoming increasingly sophisticated," commented Stephen Curtis, ACMC chairman. "The importance of healthy, genetically-advanced, prolific stock for successful production is now well recognised by progressive farmers, who are responding to encouragement by the Philippine Government for a national increase in pigmeat output."
