NFU Favours Remain Vote in Brexit Debate

UK - The National Farmers Union (NFU) has said that the interests of farmers would be best served by remaining in the EU after the referendum in June, based on current evidence.

In a statement, the organisation said that it would not actively campaign or join campaign groups or advise members how to vote, but that the position it has taken is based on evaluation of the effects of a vote either way on agriculture.

The NFU said referendum rules meant it had to take a position on the vote to allow it to continue providing information on the issues at stake to members.

Before taking the decision, the NFU council looked at issues including agricultural trade, labour availability, policy and regulation and science and research, as well as two reports on the impacts on farming.
