These are harmless naturally occurring bacteria. When given by mouth they help to maintain a balanced micro environment in the gut and inhibit the multiplication of pathogens such as E. coli. They include acid producing strains of lactobacilli, streptococci and yeasts.

In some cases they are claimed to improve feed efficiency, daily live weight gain and health but evidence for this in most cases is not convincing.
