Winnipeg retains incentives for pork plant
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg city council voted to uphold a C$3.4 million incentive package for a proposed pork processing plant, despite opposition from residents worried about the impact on air and water quality in the western Canadian city.A group of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec companies -- Hytek Ltd., Big Sky Farms Inc. and Olymel LP respectively -- aim to build the C$200 million OlyWest pork plant in the city's industrial park, where it will create up to 1,100 jobs.
City officials approved the incentive package, including land, last November, but had come under increasing pressure to ditch it. They defeated a motion to rescind the incentives in a vote of 10 to 4.
"All we said is that it's our job as a city to attract growth, jobs and development," a spokesman from the mayor's office said.
He said the economic incentives package is conditional on the consortium obtaining environmental approval by an independent provincial commission, which could take months to decide on permits.
