Pig-plant primer at OlyWest open house
CANADA - It was the OlyWest business group's first big chance to sell its hog plant to the public, but critics turned up their noses at the offer.Staunch opponents of the proposed factory in St. Boniface used the consortium's inaugural open house yesterday to rage against the pigs and their poop.
"People in Transcona are tired of being treated like pig s--t," said Louise Hedman of the Concerned Citizens Coalition. "We're not a dumping zone."
While protesters kept vigil outside the Oxford Heights Community Centre, OlyWest officials and their environmental consultants found their $200-million factory pitch received a smoother reception.
The event included about a dozen information stations. At one, analysts from Earth Tech -- a private environmental and engineering firm -- explained how the 370,000-square-foot factory would work.
