Print This Page Swine research center coming to MU
MISSOURI - MU researchers are taking one step closer to saving the world with an unexpected sidekick: pigs. The possible completion of the National Swine Research & Resource Center this summer will allow MU faculty to further their research and find cures for human diseases.“The pig is a great research model because it mimics the human body quite well,” MU spokesman Christian Basi said. “Not only in terms of how it functions but actually its size.”
It is this similarity that has prompted researchers across the country to use pigs in researching human disease, genetics and responses.
Specifically, researchers have examined the similarities between the cardiovascular systems of pigs and humans, Basi said.
