New swine fever outbreak hits Easterns Cape's struggling community

28 June 2006

EASTERN CAPE - A community outside Kirkwood had to stand by and watch helplessly yesterday when officials from the agriculture department culled hundreds of their pigs after another outbreak of classical swine fever in the Eastern Cape. The fever was identified in the area two days ago, prompting agricultural officials to begin culling the animals to prevent it from spreading.

The areas affected include Moses Mabida Township, Basheba, Bergsig, Enon, and some smallholdings between Kirkwood and Addo.

Upset community members followed the officials as they went from house to house killing the pigs. Squealing pigs could be heard from a distance as the officials stunned them with a bolt gun in the forehead before slitting their throats .

The carcasses were then carried in a wheelbarrow to a truck, which took them to a pit for burial.
