State unlikely to delay hog confinement near Ventura

"I'm discouraged," said Gayle Stokes of rural Clear Lake, who was among several area residents who spoke before the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission. They argued that potential pollution from the confinement could threaten the Clear Lake watershed, local drinking water wells and a nearby native prairie.

"I think they're going to let it go on," Stokes said afterward.

Local farmer Andy Muff, who also spoke at Monday's commission meeting, said he plans to construct a confinement operation two miles northwest of Ventura. He also filed plans with the state for a second site, but Muff said he's not building another facility in the near future.
