Print This Page DNR denies hog lot proposals
DES MOINES - Two hog confinement proposals were denied this week because they didn't meet Iowa's standards, state environmental officials said.Last spring, Webster City-based Swine Graphics Enterprises applied for construction permits to build two 4,992-head finishing facilities in northern Adair County.
The county Board of Supervisors last month recommended that the state agency deny the proposal, according to a news release from Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement.
ICCI members opposed the proposed hog factories over concerns that manure would be applied to "highly-erodible fields" that drain into the Nodaway River Valley. The group also argued that Swine Graphics had a record of environmental violations including manure spills.
"DNRs recent denial of the Swine Graphics permit to build large hog confinements reflects the strong opposition Adair County residents have to this type of activity," Jon Linn, CCI member and neighbor who lives close to one proposed site, said in a statement.
