Farmers Cope With Effects Of Heat Wave

PENNSYLVANIA - With temperatures reaching the high 90s and in some places breaking the 100-degree mark, most people spent this week just trying to stay cool.

Farmers have also spent the week trying to help their livestock remain cool and to maintain health and production.

The swine industry has kept a close watch on the health of their pigs to decrease the chance of heat-related stress or illness.

“Fortunately, most modern barns are already equipped to keep hogs relatively comfortable during hot weather,” said Kenneth Kephart from Penn State.

By making sure that their barns have a constant flow of air and by using evaporative cooling methods, farmers are able to maintain a comfortable temperature.
