Print This Page Soaring pork demand offers new markets to Polish producers
US - American meat processor Smithfield Foods, has announced that it is intending to double sales from its Polish pig meat division in an attempt to supply growing demand from Western European markets like Britain. The Prima farms group, which supplies the country's Polish arm Aminex is to double the number of sows it currently owns from 61,000 to 120,000, despite a current ban on beef and pork products from the country into Russia – formerly its biggest importer.
The loss of revenue from such a lucrative market, has forced Polish pig meet producers to look towards Western Europe's strongest markets.
“Russia's ban on pork and beef products hit Polish agriculture hard, as a result they had to find other outlets for their produce,” said Jean-Luc Meriaux, secretary general of the European livestock and meat trading union (UECBV).
