US Daily Hog Slaughter Record Could Be Challenged Soon

US - The U.S. pork industry may soon challenge the 20 1/2-month old record for daily hog slaughter, and some sources believe that this could happen as early as next week.

A new pork processing plant opened for business in St. Joseph, Missouri, early this year, and it added a second shift earlier this month. The plant is designed to process more than 1,000 head per hour, resulting in a daily figure of 16,000 or more once both shifts are running at full speed.

Industry sources said with the new plant, conditions are right for a possible test of the current daily slaughter record of 411,088 set on Dec. 16, 2004. Seasonally expanding hog supplies, a shortened workweek due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday and excellent plant margins currently provide the necessary ingredients for packers to push as many hogs through the plants as possible during the remaining four days next week.

According to livestock dealers, market analysts and other sources, the industry is currently capable of processing about 417,000 to 420,000 head per day.
