Print This Page RP eyes Singapore, EU as new markets for poultry and pork
PHILIPPINES - The government is eyeing bigger market access for the country’s pork and poultry in Singapore and Europe which seek food safety certifications particularly Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) from Filipino exporters.Davinio Catbagan, Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) director, said the European Union (EU) is interested in importing poultry from the Philippines through Royal Cargo after carefully inspecting quarantine procedures here.
"There’s a poultry market in Europe, but Europe is strict in sanitary rules. If we comply with their requirements, it will be a big score for us," he said.
The Philippine poultry industry wants to make a bigger comeback in the export market for poultry after suffering a blow from Japan’s ban on poultry import from the country in July 2005 owing to local reports of the presence of low pathogenic avian influenza. This though is not the deadly bird flu strain H5N1.
Singaporean government representatives also inspected export-capable Triple A hog slaughtering houses in Visayas and Mindanao which are certified foot and mouth disease (FMD)-free by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Office International des Epizooties (OIE).
