Pork Production Opens Door For Young Farmer
US - The lure of working outdoors encouraged Adam Sheppard to farm, but the hog industry made it possible. While he was in high school, he decided he wanted to farm. But, as with many young would-be farmers, he wasn't sure how he would accomplish his goal. "I always wanted to stay on the farm but it's hard to find the income to do it," Adam, 24, says.
"It's kind of hard to go out there and buy land and make a living off it. Land is about $4,000 an acre around here," he says of the area surrounding Hopkinton, Iowa. With buying land essentially out of the question, Adam decided he would need to invest in another area of agriculture - the livestock industry.
Rather than investing in the animals, he recognized the need for facilities for swine partnerships in his Eastern Iowa area. Adam began searching for a partnership that fit his criteria.
New Horizon Pork seemed to fit his interests. The group is made up of local people, and everyone involved has a farming background.
