Editorial: Meat Industry Urged To Be Proactive In Food Scares
UK - Meat Processing Global editor, Chris Harris, writes that the meat industry is once again the subject of damaging media headlines and it should take a more proactive stance.Once again the meat industry has been hit by a report that links eating red meat with cancer. This time the report comes from the Harvard Medical School and it is linking red meat consumption with breast cancer.
But once again it appears to be the selective and often exaggerated media coverage that has blown the report up and started a potential scare. The report relates the increased risk to eating more than one and a half portions of meat a day.
But the media reports do not specify what size those servings should or could be. The coverage of the report, which has received international coverage, also related the fact that there could be a link between some of the hormones used in rearing beef cattle and the cancer.
