Certificates of competence for animal transport

The regulation and Defra both state that training is a necessary part of the process to acquire a certificate of competence. However, the regulation gives no information on what the training must comprise or how the training itself will be provided or assessed.

NFU believes that training - in the vast majority of cases - will not be necessary. It has been working with National Proficiency Test Council’ which is likely to be the main providers of the certificate. It has continued to emphasis the need to make this process as straightforward as possible, and that it is inappropriate to require farmers who may have been involved with livestock for many years to undergo training.

The requirement for a certificate of competenc is not subject to ‘grandfather rights,’ so everyone will have to have one. But they will last a lifetime. More details from NFU as they become available.
