Print This Page Classical Swine Fever In Croatia
CROATIA - This is follow up report No.5 via OIE on the Classical Swine Fever outbreak in domestic pigs in Croatia.
Information received on 16 November 2006 from Dr Mate Brstilo, Director of the Veterinary Administration, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Zagreb:
End of previous report period: 30 October 2006 (see Disease Information, 19 [44], 763, dated 2 November 2006).
End of this report period: 15 November 2006.
Identification of agent: classical swine fever virus.
Date of first confirmation of the event: 19 July 2006.
Date of start of the event: 17 July 2006.
Clinical disease: yes.
Nature of diagnosis: clinical, post-mortem and laboratory.

Description of affected population: a farm which is a dislocated production unit of the farm at Lipovaca-Prkos where the disease was confirmed on 20 October 2006 (see Disease Information, 19 [44], 763, dated 2 November 2006). Clinical signs and dying of pigs were noticed only in one unit, consisting of 156 pregnant sows. The virus was introduced through the movements of farm workers.

Source of outbreak or origin of infection: fomites (humans, vehicles, feed, etc.).
Control measures undertaken:
- stamping out;
- quarantine;
- movement control inside the country;
- screening;
- zoning;
- disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s).
Treatment of affected animals: no.
Vaccination prohibited: yes.
Other details/comments: twelve out of 50 samples taken from different pig categories in the affected farm were positive for classical swine fever virus.
