Because of imports, Russia pork sold for next to nothing
RUSSIA - Marketing pork in Russia is a headache for producers. With the growth of production, Russian hog breeders have to sell their products for next to nothing, mainly because of the fact that imported pork is sold at dumping prices, Vyacheslav Kozhevnikov, the deputy head of the Russian Pork Producers Association, told ltar-Tass on Wednesday.“The purchase price of one kilogram of pork was 60 roubles at the beginning of the year; now it is 43-47 roubles, with imported pork selling 10-15 percent cheaper,” Kozhevnikov said. Despite a sharp drop in the price, it has not become easier to market the product. “Meat-packing plants refuse from domestic pork, preferring lower quality imported pork,” Kozhevnikov said.
Although a substantive growth of pork output, 10 percent, is expected this year, “the profitableness of pork production in Russia is about zero,” Kozhevnikov said. The output of hog breeding farms grew by over 500,000 tonnes in the ten months of this year, and in all kinds of economies by 4-5 percent. It amounted to 1.6 million tonnes last year.
Meanwhile, according to the information of the Russian Pork Producers Association, 87,000 tonnes of imported pork above the quota was put on the Russian market in eight months of this year. “Russia’s pork imports amounted to 580,000 tonnes last year, while the quota was 472,600 tonnes.
