China Hog Weekly
CHINA - In this weeks China Hog Weekly, eFeedLink report that prices continued to move higher on tight supply and a sharp rise in pork demand. In particular, prices in Shanghai and Guangzhou, Guangdong province, were the highest among major hog consumption regions, while some foreign cross-breed lean hog prices registered as high as RMB11.00/kg.
Market analysis
Most hog farmers incurred losses during the earlier period when prices were weak, which slowed down the pace of piglet inventory replenishments. Additionally, the pig disease outbreaks of recent months have further affected hog supply, while the continued rise in prices has prompted hog farmers to regulate supplies to the market in anticipation of more near-term price gains.
The price difference between domestic cross-breed lean hogs and foreign cross-breed lean hogs has narrowed in regions such as Hunan and Hebei. Waxed meat production has kicked off across many villages, bolstering local demand for domestic cross-breed lean hogs by small-scale slaughterhouses and hence driving up domestic cross-breed lean hog prices.
Market forecast
With continued tightness seen in near-term supply and currently strong pork demand, hog prices should register further gains in the week ahead.
