S'pore not affected by use of banned growth enhancers in Malaysian pork
19 December 2006SINGAPORE - The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) says that Singapore is not affected by the use of a banned growth enhancer in 30 Malaysian pig farms.
Malaysia has quarantined these farms for a month after the pigs there tested positive for beta-agonist, a substance banned 10 years ago. It is also used as a medicine for patients suffering from asthma.
But when it is consumed in pork, it causes headaches, dizziness, breathing difficulties and can even be fatal for those suffering from heart-related diseases.
The quarantined farms are in the northern states of Perak and Penang and central Malacca and Selangor states.
