Government slaughter houses found treating animals appalingly
MALTA - A shocking report which reached the ministry for rural affairs and environment in September exposes appalling animal welfare practices at government-run farms and slaughter houses. The offloading through dragging and reception area are inadequate |
The animals were generally observed to be crammed into transport vehicles and pens without adequate sanitary conditions, some of them were also injured or sick. This constitutes a direct contravention with the Animal Slaughter Killing Regulations 2003 and Animal Transport Regulations 2003.
Pigs in "Pain and suffering"
The Ministry has kept the report away from the public eye and no action was taken to improve the situation highlighted in the report last September, sources said.
Pig slaughtering methods were found to be “poor” and cause unnecessary “pain and suffering” for the pigs.
The report finds that there is a general use of force on pigs from the offloading, lairage, animal movement and stunning application.
