Farmers look for increases in hog prices

PENNSYLVANIA - Pennsylvania hog farmers are used to roller-coaster rides when it comes to their profits.

The good news is that prices were steady last year and consumers have turned back to pork, several said this week at the 91st Pennsylvania State Farm Show.

The bad news is that higher prices for fuel and grain attributed to increasing demand for corn-based ethanol could squeeze their profit margins, said Glen Ebersole of Duncannon.

"Even prices here at the Farm Show swine sale are down from last year," he said. "It's costing more and more to feed hogs."

Benner Hall of Julian raises 600 hogs in Centre County. He said the market is flooded with hogs, and that's driving prices down.
