Future of Maple Leaf hog plant threatened in Manitoba
BERWICK - Without short-term government aid for hog farmers, the future of the Maple Leaf meat packing plant and its 450 jobs is threatened, says Kings West Liberal MLA Leo Glavine. As farmers begin to cull their herds and others prepare to leave the business entirely, there is going to be a reduction in the weekly supply of hogs to the plant, Mr. Glavine said Monday.
He said the Tory government is making the wrong assumption about the future of the former Larsen’s plant — that it will remain open even after a drop in the supply of hogs.
In fact, the future of the plant is already in jeopardy, as Maple Leaf Foods reviews the efficiency of the facility, with an eye toward consolidating all its red meat operations in Brandon, Man.
A decline in the supply of local hogs could be the death knell of the plant, said Mr. Glavine, in whose riding the meat packing facility is located.
Last week, Maple Leaf announced it would close its Canard poultry processing plant, with the loss of 380 jobs, in April.
