Maverick farmer pioneers new pig-breeding method

A farmer from a central province has piloted raising pigs bred from wild boars and domestic sows, aimed at producing a novel species to counter rampant poaching and improve returns.

Last October, The brought home the sow along with six healthy piglets from the union that now weigh 5 to 6kg each.

The aesthetic difference between the bred piglets and their domestic peers is the former has shorter hair than the latter, The said.

He let the free-range pigs roam around the garden and fed them with cereals and mash, seeing good development and low maintenance, hence a good prospect for profiting from the new breed.

The unveiled plans to build a 7ha farm and buy three more tame wild boars to raise the hybridized pigs this year, adding he was seeking the go-ahead from agencies concerned to transfer the breeding know-how to other local farmers.
