Environmental row over pig farm at Angamaly

UP - The pig farm run by the Kerala State Animal Husbandry Department at Angamaly Town has been mired in controversy. The Angamaly Municipal Council has recently urged the State Government to relocate the farm which is causing ‘serious environmental pollution in the town’.

In a resolution, Municipal Councillor K K Sali pointed out that the pig farm was functioning in violation of guidelines. He said that the farm simply lacked facilities for treating the waste. An excess number of pigs are housed in the farm in unhygienic conditions.

Another allegation against the farm is that it is instrumental in contaminating the drinking water sources in that area. The farm poses serious threat to the health of the people in the area, especially those residing close to it.

A huge quantity of waste is generated by the farm, but the department has never bothered to treat it scientifically following primitive methods of disposal, he alleged.

The residents in the area suffer untold miseries due to foul smell emanating from the farm which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Around ten government offices, schools, hospitals and private establishments function near the pig farm, he said.

Sali urged in the resolution that the farm should be re-located another area immediately.
