Print This Page Importing of pigs permitted again
SOUTH AFRICA - Roadblocks prohibiting the import of pigs and raw pork products from the Eastern Cape to the Western Cape to prevent the spread of Swine Fever have finally been disbanded.Two roadblocks on the border of the provinces, on the N2 near Plettenberg Bay and in the Langkloof on the R62, were disbanded during the weekend. They had been in force for two years.
The Western Cape Agriculture Department had dedicated 15 staff, including veterinarians, to the project.
The staff members can now be used elsewhere.
"It made a dent in our manpower. We're relieved it's over," said Allie van Jaarsveld, spokesperson for Agriculture MEC Cobus Dowry.
