Print This Page UK Import Controls Not Up To Scratch, Says EU
UK - More than six years on from foot-and-mouth, UK import controls are still not up to scratch, an EU investigation has concluded.Inspectors from the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office visited the UK in November 2006 to examine import controls in place for meat and live animals, taking in four UK airports and one port.
The UK has been under pressure to tighten up its border controls ever since illegally-imported meat was identified as the probable cause of the foot-and-mouth epidemic.
The FVO report, published this spring, concluded that there was now a ‘largely functioning import control system in place’ in the UK. But, it identified a number of ‘weaknesses’ in the system, some of which had not been put right following recommendation made in previous reports. Shortcomings identified include:
