It's time to shout about investment
BPEX says that producers are beginning to realise the financial benefits of investing in new, purpose built finishing systems. A number of key producers have put up or are considering new facilities, although they are not shouting about it.
"The interest is there, the benefits in terms of health alone cannot be ignored and the technology available is helping to build confidence," Mark Wilson, BPEX Director of Pig Industry Development.
Speaking to the PigSite during the Paradigms in Pig Science conference, he said that uncertainty was what was preventing many producers moving forward. It was understandable, but unless BPEX, and others, could communicate the benefits and economic reality of investment - by demonstrating and publicising real life case studies - then many would continue to hold off and the industry would fall further behind and loose more market share to its EU competitors.
"Farmers that have taken the plunge and put up new buildings are making money, but we need them to share their experience with others. It's this kind of knowledge transfer that will convince those who are as yet undecided into making the right decision. This will help the industry recover, raise efficiency and its market position," said Mr Wilson.
