Agitation: Pig rearers protesting against the Salem Corporation’s move to catch the stray pigs in the city on Saturday.

A team of workers caught about 70 pigs in Lakshmi Nagar, Gandhi Maidan, SBI Colony and a few other parts in Wards 38 and 39. Residents in these areas complained that pigs were posing serious threat to human health and causing immense inconvenience.

The Corporation asked the pig rearers to shift the rearing location to the outskirts of the city and given time to move the animals. But they neglected the request.

The Corporation launched the drive six months ago, but could not carry out the exercise in last three months. "Now, we have started the exercise again, we will remove all the pigs in city streets," said health officials.
