Analysts predict meat imports will rise, eclipse domestic production

GEORGIA - Georgia will soon be eating mostly imported meat, says the newspaper Rezonansi.

Quoted analysts say this is not only because of the devastating repercussions of the recent African swine fever epidemic, but also because top Georgian figures have a stake in the industry.

The meat business brought enough profit to capture the attention of former officials in the Shevardnadze administration, the paper writes.

There were about 24 000 tons of meat imported to Georgia in the first five months of 2007. Most beef, about 3 900 tons, came from India. Brazil was a top supplier of pork, selling 2 443 tons to the country out of 3 660 tons of pork imported in total.
