High prices spur pig smuggling from Vietnam to China

Chinese police in the southern region of Guangxi, bordering Vietnam, have seized more than 400 pigs that were smuggled into the country since Aug, the news agency said.

On Tuesday, border police in the region's Dongxin town found 48 pigs with no quarantine certificates that were being transported via the border on three tractors, it said.

Xinhua said the region's border police have launched campaigns since Aug to crackdown on smuggling, which has become rampant because of high domestic pork prices and pork shortage in some areas.

All the smuggled pigs were destroyed, it said.
