Farmers’ fears of fresh crisis

Meanwhile, hundreds of visitors descended on Bewerley Park, Pateley Bridge, for the annual Nidderdale Agricultural Show - which took place yesterday with no livestock.

Organisers were determined that the show would go on, despite the latest foot and mouth disease cases.

Cattle, sheep and goats were all banned - but there was still a vast array of birds, horses, poultry, waterfowl, pigeons, rabbits and guinea pigs on display.

The Yorkshire director of the Country Land & Business Association (CLA), Dorothy Fairburn, said it was a shame the show had to take place without livestock, but farmers had much more serious problems to deal with.
