Print This Page Swine Fever Outbreak: Hundreds of Pigs Die
GAMBIA - At least 453 pigs (hogs) have so far perished in the Old Jeshwang area alone during the outbreak of the deadly swine fever in early August. The pig breeders in Old Jeshwang that I spoke to told me that all their herds died within a period of a month during the outbreak. Estimate of the loss is almost D2 million assuming that each pig is worth D4000.
According to Mr. Beniot Colley, he lost 54 pigs last August. He said the disease was deadly, noting that 5 to 6 pigs died in a day. Mrs. Kaddy Sambou, an old woman in her 60s said she lost 60 pigs to the deadly disease.
