7,000 jobs at risk in pig industry

IRELAND - FINE Gael Agriculture and Food Spokesperson Michael Creed has claimed the combination of Fianna Fail and the Greens in Government would contribute to rising food prices and lead to job losses, especially in the pig and poultry industry.

"Fianna Fail’s lack of commitment to a viable, vibrant agriculture industry coupled with Green Party political manoeuvering is a dangerous combination for farm-ers."

In particular, decisions on the importation of genetically modified (GM) feed have the potential to badly damage the agricultural sector.

"Food Minister Trevor Sargent appears to be trying to ride two horses on this issue. The inevitable consequence of Green posturing on GM feed combined with Fianna Fail indifference will be job losses in the pig and poultry sector immediately and higher food prices for consumers sooner rather than later."

"As the price of compound feeds increases due to Government inaction, the pig industry is immediately in the firing line. 7,000 jobs are at risk and if bacon products have to be imported prices will rise."
