EU pig prices: Markets still under pressure
EU - Hope for the prices to quickly stabilise on the European markets has ended in smoke over the past few days. The quantities of slaughter pigs now being offered continue to be burdensome to an extent that does not allow the markets to stabilise. In the Netherlands, people complain about having to move pigs currently, although the slaughter houses are being run at full capacity. For that reason, all quotations within the EU are giving in noticeably this week - apart from the Swedish quotation.
Looking at it from the Danish exporters’ perspective, one finds that export currently is quite satisfying with regard to quantities; this mostly goes for exports toward Russia, Japan and Australia. As regards Central and Western Europe, things appear to be worse: There, lower prices are paid for ham and shoulder. At the same time, Belgian distributors grumble about Danish meat being offered at “cheap rates” within the EU now.
Trend: The quantities of slaughter pigs will continue to be large over the next weeks. The hope remains however, that export will gain momentum at so low a price level, allowing the market to finally be relieved.
