PM calls to curb spread of blue-ear disease

VIET NAM - Vietnam's prime minister has ordered animal authorities to control the spread of the blue-ear pig disease (PRRS), saying livestock producers aren't aware of the threat posed by the virus.

He says the epidemic has been reported for several months - with complicated developments.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung says local leaders and livestock raisers have neither had a full awareness of the danger of the epidemic, nor have they been on high alert.

He has ordered authorities to use their local budgets to battle the disease, including paying compensation to farmers whose pigs are culled. He also asked officials to step up information campaigns about the epidemic.

The government hasn't said how many pigs have been infected with the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome reported in three provinces in Vietnam.
