Huge producer 'pat on the back' for retailer

UK - The National Pig Association has commended Morrisons for becoming the first of the big four supermarkets to pledge to sell only British fresh pork.

"This is a major commitment for Morrisons and they have not entered into it lightly," said NPA chairman Stewart Houston. "Their action will help drive up the price for British pigs at a time when all pig producers are making a loss because of rocketing feed wheat prices.

Morrisons' will have to work creatively and innovatively to overcome any carcase balance issues that may arise, but NPA believes that the new all-British policy will be a good move because it is what their customers want.

NPA is now calling on the other major retailers - Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's - to adopt a similar policy and has pledged to work with them to achieve this.

Morrisons has now cancelled any further orders of imported fresh pork and has said that within a week it will be selling only British fresh pork in its stores.

"We buy a large amount of primary produce direct from farmers and growers in the United Kingdom, giving us close control over provenance and quality. This involvement in the supply chain means that we have been able to deliver the commitment to 100 percent British fresh pork within such a short time frame," said chief executive Marc Bolland.
