Omega-3 pork poised to grab market share
CANADA - A deal between Canadian retailer Co-op Atlantic and its partner the Natural Organic Food Group (NOFG) to sell Omega-3 enhanced pork products is expected to bring financial rewards to feed and nutrition specialist Stirling Products.The retail agreement will source Omega-3 pork products raised by local farmers that feed their swine a natural and strict diet primarily of soybean and flaxseed that has an enhanced natural Omega-3 content including ProVale.
This ingredient is a highly purified "immunobiotic" that can boost the immune system against various bacterial and viral diseases, says the company. The product already has an established market North America and South East Asia where it is fed to poultry and pigs.
Stirling Products North America (SPNA) expects to reap increased distribution sales revenue from its Omega-3 premix that is supplied to farms working with the retail and NOFG partnership.
"This is great news for our Canadian operation. Although the highly purified beta glucan ProVale(tm) is the major product from this operation, we are keen to expand our sales of Omega-3 premix. This recent announcement strengthens the partnership that we have with NOFG and we look forward to assisting in their success," explained Dr Calvin London, CEO and Managing Director of Stirling Products.
Omega-3 fatty acids have long been recognised for their health benefits, such as improving heart and vascular health, but are not manufactured by the human body. The ability to enrich pork products, especially bacon fat, is seen as an attractive alternative for humans to increase their intake of Omega-3's compared to fish products, which are naturally high in Omega-3 oils.
SPNA, based on Prince Edward Island, Canada, has the exclusive rights to distribute the Omega-3 premix which is currently manufactured to proprietary specifications by KenPal Inc., a leading Canadian supplier of custom premixes and nutritional supplements.
According to recent surveys, it is estimated that 60 per cent of the North American population is interested in consuming functional food related products in order to get a healthy advantage.
