PRETORIA - One of the pioneers of industrial and organised pig production in South Africa, Gerard Braak (Senior), has died. He passed away yesterday in Pretoria following a long illness.
Mr Braak (pictured) was an active member of the pig industry between 1950 and 1990, and was chairman of the Transvaal Pig Development Association, a position he held for many years. He also chaired the National Pig Development Association, which later became the South African Pork Producers' Organisation (SAPPO).
He was a pioneer in many areas such as artificial insemination and was one of the first producers to use AI on pigs in South Africa. He was also a member of South Africa's Meat Board for 30 years and a director of many companies including Eskort and Abacor.
