Print This Page Diffuse Water Warrants Attention, Says BPEX
UK - BPEX Pig Technologist, Nigel Penlington, has compiled a document summarising the three diffuse water consultations (DEFRA) which have/are taking place. His report 'BPEX Environmental Issues DEFRA Diffuse Water Pollution Consultations 2007' provides a condensed summary of the implications and the anticipated benefits, key proposals and direct consequences to the pig sector.
It has information on three key areas for pig producers:
- Implementation of the Nitrates Directive in England (NVZs)
- Diffuse sources in England ( Proposed measures under the Water Framework Directive)
- Code of Good Agricultural Practice to protect water, soil and air quality. (Revised codes etc)
The European Commission considers that the UK has not implemented the Nitrate Directive adequately and is threatening infraction proceeding, says Mr Penlington. Although the Environment Agency reports that Nitrate levels in surface waters are declining, few levels are sustained and there are concerns over ground water sources.
The BPEX report discusses options for farmers and also the benefits of tighter environmental controls.
